Lisa Thomas-Laury is a retired news anchor who paved the way for African American women in broadcast journalism. Lisa’s passion for broadcasting ignited during her college years at Marshall University, where she earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism. While still a student, she landed her first job as a weather reporter for the NBC affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia. This early experience laid the groundwork for her future success.

In 1978, Lisa’s career took a significant leap forward. She competed for a news anchor position at Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV, and in a noteworthy achievement, she beat out Oprah Winfrey for the role. This win marked her entry into the industry at a young age, making her one of the first Black TV journalists in the country. She began her tenure at WPVI as a noon co-anchor and reporter.

WPVI Anchor and Program Host (1980s-2000s):

Lisa’s talent and dedication were recognized, leading to promotions within WPVI. By 1983, she co-anchored the prestigious 5 PM newscast alongside Marc Howard, a position she held for nearly two decades. Throughout her years at WPVI, she established herself as a trusted news source for millions of viewers in the Delaware Valley.

Facing Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles:

Lisa’s career wasn’t without challenges. In her mid-40s, she was diagnosed with POEMS Syndrome, a rare and debilitating nerve disorder. This diagnosis forced her to take a two-year break to undergo treatment and recovery.

Retirement, Authorship, and Motivational Speaking (2010s-Present):

In 2016, Lisa made the decision to retire from anchoring after an incredible 38 years at WPVI. However, her retirement marked a new chapter. Drawing on her experiences, she authored a memoir titled “On Camera and Off, When the News is Good and When it’s Not.” The book serves as a source of motivation for others facing chronic illnesses and navigating complex healthcare systems. Lisa also uses her platform as a motivational speaker, sharing her story and inspiring others to persevere through challenges.
