So, I guess we have all been there…when we were at our workstations probably drifting in and out of sleep. Forever yawning down those never-ending emails and whatnot. But not to worry as we are here to save the day (or in this case help you float) so we got you a couple of tips to stay awake on those go-go days!
1. Stay Hydrated!
It is SO easy to get caught up in work and forget to hydrate yourself. Hear me out — if you are experiencing drowsiness and you are losing concentration, and you are feeling low energy, before you go and chug that 100th cup of coffee, drink some water, I beg you. You could be dehydrated, and that is causing that lack of energy/lack of focus. Also (because drinking tons of water can be quite boring), you can always spice it up a bit and add cucumber, lemon, ice, fruit, etc., to your water bottle and have the good old razz-a-matazz in your water while staying hydrated.
2. Energizing Snacks!
Let’s discuss what we are fueling our bellies with because the foods we eat can honestly make or put forth a break for us. Leave the junk in the past and start eating whole and nutritious food that your body thrives on. Also — foods like nuts, yogurt, or foods that have high water content (apples, bananas, etc). Foods with complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats (whole wheat crackers and hummus) will also give you a steady flow of energy throughout the day. Store these natural foods in your desk, and when you start to crash, you know the drill — snack, snack, snack! You’ll crash no longer.
3. Take Breaks—Yes, Really!
Now, I know this sounds counterintuitive. Stopping to rest while you have a pile of papers and probably at least 15 emails to get through is anxiety producing, I get that. But resting will probably even help reduce overall anxiety. Your big beautiful brain needs that break to function properly and not with a pile of wet spaghetti on top. You will process the info you receive more efficiently and ward off that brain drought. Try the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes on; 5 minutes off. Stand up, walk around your work area, stretch.!! All of these will help you push the reset button and have a real break so you can feel fresh.
4. Wear a Great Perfume!
This may seem like such a random trick, but scent can help you feel energized. This is the logic behind those stinky-smelling salts “gym bros” use before they lift, or the whole point of essential oils and diffusers! Wearing a great-smelling perfume that you like and spritzing it in the office can be that helpful infusion that you need to keep going. The citrus family is probably your safest bet when it comes to an energizing perfume; something that has lemon and bergamot will do the trick, or maybe go for an orange-scented perfume for that extra zing.
5. Get Moving!
Another way to do all of these is to move!! Don’t roll your eyes or click off and think we are suggesting you go do leg day at the gym or anything like that. Small, short bursts of motion are highly invigorating!! Go outside and take a walk when you give your eyes that little rest, do desk stretches. Heck, go run around the parking lot if you can do it safely! Endorphins love your body when you move, especially when you ramp up your blood flow to both your body and brain, thereby providing more clarity and invigoration.
Taking On A Stressful Day
A 10-12 hour work day doesn’t necessarily have to feel like slugging on organs on a battlefield. With these helpful tips and tricks, you can help make a hard day a little more tolerable.
